Owning a home still remains a large part of the American Dream. A majority of Americans view home ownership as very important. There is a significant group of potential home buyers who are, however, forced to delay the realization of that home ownership dream. In fact, one in four potential home buyers know someone who has delayed buying a home because of financial burdens. With the economic environment still recovery, there are a host of financial obstacles first-time home buyers must overcome to buy a house.
Among the financial barriers aspiring homeowners must overcome include student loan debt, a lack of a down payment, lack of job security and the inability to afford a home in their desired community. The burden of student debt is by far the biggest barrier. In fact, this financial barrier is the reason why 17% of potential home buyers delay purchasing a home.
