The average home prices in San Diego County continue to go up putting a tight financial squeeze on prospective home buyers. The high housing costs also has a negative effect on sellers, forcing many would-be sellers to stay put in their current home. The majority of current home owners would like to move into a better home, but are not able to afford it even if they sold their current home. This dilemma is called the affordability squeeze. Thirty-five percent of home owners wanted to sell their home last year, but 64% of them are reluctant to sell because of the high cost of the home they want. With less homeowners willing or able to sell their current homes, the less more affordable homes there are available which contributes to keeping prices high and inventory low.
